２／１１の第１９回月例集会に結集しよう！/ Anti-Nuclear Monthly Rally
Dear Consulate General and Prime Minister
The No Nukes Action Committee is writing to you today to share our concerns about the very dangerous threat to Japan and humanity continues to see in the meltdown of the Fukushima nuclear plants. Although the Japan government and the US government have said this is under control the facts tell us differently.
Radioactive material continues to escape from the plants and is ending up in ground water and then the Pacifica Ocean.
At the same time your government with the support of the US government has said that you can “overcome” radiation and have raised the levels of radiation allowed by law. This is scientifically faulty.
You can protect from radiation by lead and other material but you cannot overcome the affects of radiation contamination.
Your government has also spent billions of dollars in so called “decontamination” schemes again with the support of the US government. This idea you can decontaminate the housing by washing the roofs down and removing the top soil of schools and other public facilities is totally fallacious. The radioactive contamination with cesium and even plutonium cannot be removed from the forests that cover much of the coast line of Fukushima. The rain carries these dangerous contaminants and every time it rains in Fukushima it is spreading the radioactive material.
At the same time the fact that the Japanese government is now the owner of TEPCO demands that there be an immediate end to the use of contracted out labor. Thousands of nuclear plant workers have been contaminated and as a result of corrupt contractors and subcontractors these workers are not being properly monitored and their health and safety is not protected both by training and for healthcare in the future. The use of contract labor by the Japanese government in Fukushima nuclear plants and clean-up is unacceptable and is a threat to these workers and the public.
The actual situation requires that there be an immediate evacuation of the children and people of the Fukushima area. Many are unable to leave due to their financial situation and the failure of the government to fund such an evacuation. Additionally despite the serious dangers of these nuclear plants the Japanese government continues to export the technology to other countries such as India, Turkey and Vietnam. This will only put these populations are danger as well.
At the same time the government is supporting secrecy laws that make it a crime to even find out about supposed “secrets”. Virtually the entire media of Japan and even the New York Times are against this regressive legislation which could conceivably make it a crime to expose information about radioactive leaks and dangers at other nuclear plants as well as Fukushima.
We call for the repeal of this law which threatens all democratic rights.
The NNA committee calls on the Japanese government to take responsibility for these health and safety hazards and other policies that threaten the people of Japan.
